Longhouse children receive school kits as part of the outreach programme.

KUCHING (April 10): A community outreach initiative has brought occupational health and safety awareness to rural residents at Rumah Ngindang, Rantau Kemayau Manis in Lubok Antu.

Held in conjunction with the upcoming 24th Asian Congress on Occupational Health (ACOH) 2026, supported by Business Events (BE) Sarawak, the programme gathered about 200 participants from the longhouse and nearby communities.

The initiative aimed to bridge the gap between professional health standards and rural needs by equipping residents with practical knowledge for safer and healthier living.

Participants received basic health services, including screenings, dental check-ups and eye examinations, alongside safety talks and hands-on demonstrations such as the proper use of fire extinguishers.

ACOH 2026 Congress chair Dr Abu Hasan Samad said the programme reflects efforts to deliver lasting benefits to rural communities while strengthening safety awareness at the grassroots level.

“Beyond immediate benefits of dental and health screenings, we hope the programme will contribute towards improving the community’s quality of life while also strengthening awareness of safety practices within the longhouse environment,” he said in a statement.

To support long-term community development, organisers also set up a mini library within the longhouse to encourage reading and knowledge-sharing among residents.

The outreach was carried out in collaboration with multiple agencies, including the Betong Fire and Rescue Department, Sri Aman Division Health Department, Physiotherapy Unit and Dental Unit of Sri Aman Hospital, the Nanga Stamang Health Clinic, Sarawak State Health Department, the Rotary Club of Kuching, and Jee Kwong Optical Group.

ACOH 2026, organised by the Academy of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Malaysia, will be held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) from August 5 to 8.

The congress will bring together regional and international experts to discuss emerging issues and innovations in occupational health and safety.

Registration for the congress is now open.

PUTRAJAYA (April 10): A total of 300 MySTEP Hostel Assistant Wardens (MyPWA) have been appointed effective April 1 and will be deployed across boarding schools nationwide, the Ministry of Education (MoE) announced.

In a statement, the MoE said the initiative, introduced as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen safety in residential school environments, also aims to ease the workload of teachers who currently shoulder multiple responsibilities beyond the classroom.

“Under the programme, MyPWA personnel will assist hostel wardens, particularly in supervising students during nighttime hours.

“Their role focuses on ensuring the safety, welfare, and overall well-being of boarding students are consistently maintained at a high standard,” it said.

The ministry added that the implementation of the MyPWA will be progressively expanded as part of a broader push to enhance safety reforms across all educational institutions under its purview.

The move is also aligned with the Malaysia Education Plan 2026-2035, which emphasises the need for subject teachers to concentrate on core teaching and learning activities, while support personnel take on auxiliary responsibilities within school operations.

KUCHING (April 10): A total of 31 underprivileged families across the city received essential food supplies from Exal Malaysia last month.

The recipients were from Kampung Pinggan Jaya, Kampung Tanjong Bako, Kampung Paya Mebi, Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Kampung Sejijak, Kampung Stapok, Kampung Sri Arjuna and Kampung Haji Baki.

The initiative, held from March 17 to 19 in collaboration with the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), saw Exal Malaysia distribute approximately RM15,000 worth of essential food supplies to needy households and single mothers.

The company said the initiative reflects its broader philosophy of building communities beyond homes, where long-term value extends beyond physical infrastructure.

The programme was led by Exal Malaysia managing director Albert Ko and attended by MPP chairman Tan Kai and councillors Mohammad Fauzi Ali and Shamsuddin Unai.

Ko said the company believes that building communities goes beyond delivering homes.

“It means contributing meaningfully to the people who live in them. This initiative reflects our belief that responsible development must also create a positive and lasting impact within the communities we serve,” he said.

Exal Malaysia noted that the programme reflects a growing shift within Malaysia’s property sector, where developers are increasingly expected to contribute to social sustainability alongside physical development.

It added that community engagement and social impact are becoming key benchmarks for long-term corporate value and stakeholder trust, in line with Bursa Malaysia’s environmental, social and governance (ESG) guidelines and broader industry trends.

By working closely with MPP and local community leaders, Exal Malaysia said it ensured the initiative was both targeted and impactful, reinforcing the significance of cooperation in addressing real community needs.

“As Exal expands its footprint in Sarawak, the developer remains committed to integrating social responsibility into its developments while strengthening community resilience,” it added.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Chiew Choon Man said RM430,000 has been allocated to upgrade the observation tower at Taman Awam Miri following his recent site visit to assess urgent repair needs.

The upgrading works will include structural reinforcements using steel components, installation of reinforcement plates, replacement of timber flooring, and improvements to safety features such as railings, handrails and roofing.

“I am concerned with the safety and maintenance of Taman Awam Miri as it serves both as an important recreational space for the local community and a tourist attraction for visitors,” said the Miri MP.

The works are expected to commence within the next three months.

In addition, RM420,000 has been approved for the construction and upgrading of a bridge and pedestrian walkway at Patrick Libau Homestay, near Niah National Park.

The project will include the use of durable belian timber and improvements to existing facilities, including maintenance of toilets at the homestay.

“Niah National Park is one of the most renowned tourism assets in Miri, and the infrastructure upgrades will enhance accessibility and improve the overall visitor experience,” he added.

Chiew said he will continue to support efforts to maintain and develop key tourism products so they remain safe, resilient and beneficial to both local communities and international visitors.

KUCHING (April 10): Marking 55 years of advancing Sarawak’s socio-economic transformation, the Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) celebrated its legacy of impact at the ‘Serambi Syawal’ Open House 2026 that reflected gratitude for past achievements and commitment to future growth.

Held at a leading hotel here, the Hari Raya Aidilfitri gathering brought together SEDC staff, subsidiaries, investors, government agencies, private sector partners and stakeholders in a celebration that underscored the corporation’s enduring contributions to the state.

Officiated by Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Project Coordinator for Regional Development Agencies, Kuching North City Commission and Islamic Affairs) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, representing the Premier of Sarawak, the event highlighted the close synergy between SEDC and the state leadership in strengthening development initiatives.

SEDC chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain reflected on the corporation’s journey since its establishment in 1972.

“From its early focus on basic industries and property development, SEDC has evolved into a key player in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, hydrogen development, tourism, overseas investments, as well as the digital and green economy.

“SEDC’s success over the past five and a half decades is not measured solely by financial returns, but by its tangible impact on the people of Sarawak.

“Our achievements are reflected in the opportunities we create ― through job creation, talent development, entrepreneurship, and corporate social responsibility initiatives that uplift communities across the state,” he said.

Abdul Aziz noted that SEDC’s transformation aligns with Sarawak’s Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, reinforcing its role in supporting sustainable and inclusive economic growth under the Sarawak Maju Makmur vision.

He added that major undertakings, including hydrogen-related initiatives and long-term development master plans, demonstrate the corporation’s readiness to position Sarawak at the forefront of emerging industries while ensuring that progress translates into meaningful benefits for the people.

Describing the open house as more than a festive tradition, Abdul Aziz said it symbolises the strong partnerships and shared aspirations that have underpinned SEDC’s achievements over the decades.

“The success we celebrate today is the result of collective effort and enduring cooperation with ministries, agencies and private sector partners,” he said, expressing appreciation for their continued trust and support.

As guests enjoyed the nostalgic ambience of ‘Serambi Syawal’, complete with festive fare and traditional performances, the celebration served as a reminder that SEDC’s 55-year journey has been defined not just by growth, but by its steadfast mission ― ‘Prospering Sarawak Today for Tomorrow’.

Also present was State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohd Abu Bakar Marzuki.

The event also featured 17 booths showcasing an assortment of food and beverages.

A best-decorated booth competition was also held, won by a team comprising SEDC Global Business Services, SEDC Permata and Damai and Country Club.

Sarawak AMOs take their oath during the programme.

BINTULU (April 10): Assistant Medical Officers (AMOs) in Sarawak have been urged to embrace modernisation, strengthen professional competencies and uphold compassion in delivering quality healthcare services in line with evolving demands post-pandemic demands.

Sarawak chief AMO Samsuri Md Isa said the role of AMOs has become increasingly critical as the healthcare system undergoes transformation.

“Healthcare delivery can no longer be business as usual. We must move faster, be more efficient, and think more strategically,” he said during the Sarawak-level Medical Assistants Day 2026 celebration here yesterday.

The event, themed ‘Driving Service Modernisation, Elevating Healthcare Quality’, was officiated by Deputy Health Minister Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib.

Samsuri outlined three key priorities to enhance the profession and the healthcare delivery framework.

Firstly, he stressed the need for service modernisation through the adoption of digital technology, including electronic medical records and clinical innovations, to improve efficiency.

Secondly, he called for continuous competency development among AMOs, including enhanced clinical skills and leadership training.

“We want to produce a workforce that is not only competent but also capable of critical thinking and able to compete in a rapidly changing environment,” he said.

Thirdly, Samsuri emphasised the significance of integrity and empathy in healthcare, noting that technological advancement alone is insufficient without strong human values.

“In medicine, technology may help treat patients, but it is humanity that truly heals,” he added.

Samsuri described Sarawak’s AMOs as frontliners who play a crucial role in strengthening the healthcare system.

“If we want a strong healthcare system, we must empower those on the frontlines,” he said, adding that AMOs are not merely implementers but drivers of change.

Samsuri expressed hope that the annual celebration would serve as a catalyst for renewed commitment among healthcare workers to deliver excellent service.

He also conveyed his appreciation to all AMOs in Sarawak for their dedication, sacrifice and tireless service in ensuring efficient and quality healthcare delivery across the state.

The ceremony was attended by Sarawak Health Department director Dr Veronica Lugah, deputy directors, healthcare officials, and members of the medical assistants’ fraternity.

KUCHING (April 10): Travellers flying with state-owned airline AirBorneo can now enjoy a more seamless travel experience with the launch of its official mobile application.

Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, the app is designed to streamline the travel journey with three key features: flight booking across AirBorneo’s network, mobile check-in with digital boarding passes, and access to a comprehensive record of past and upcoming trips.

Chief executive officer Megat Ardian Wira said the launch marks a major milestone in the airline’s digital transformation.

“This app is the first milestone in a long-term digital roadmap designed to redefine regional aviation,” he said in a statement following the launch yesterday.

“Our goal is to create a truly integrated network where guests can fly into our primary hubs and transit effortlessly to our rural air service routes, ensuring every corner of Borneo is accessible.”

He noted that as the airline expands its fleet and network, the platform will support more personalised and predictive travel experiences, positioning AirBorneo as a technologically advanced, guest-centric carrier.

AirBorneo currently serves 21 destinations across Sarawak and Sabah, including Rural Air Services (RAS) routes that connect remote communities where air travel remains essential.

The airline was established following the acquisition of MASwings Sdn Bhd on Dec 31, 2025, making AirBorneo Malaysia’s first state-owned airline.

Its main operational bases are in Kota Kinabalu and Miri, with a fleet comprising eight ATR 72-500 aircraft and six DHC-6-400 Twin Otter aircraft.

Passengers can use the AirBorneo app to book flights, check in on the go, and manage their travel history directly from their mobile devices.

BINTULU (April 10): Progressive organisations should allocate at least three to five per cent of their annual financial resources towards human capital development, including training, education and leadership competency enhancement, to ensure the sustainability of cooperatives.

Sarawak Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat said some cooperatives still regard training as a cost rather than a strategic investment.

He stressed that such a mindset must change if cooperatives are to elevate their performance to a higher level.

“Some of the challenges faced by cooperatives today, particularly in governance, stem from weaknesses in management knowledge and understanding,” he said when officiating the Jom@Coop Turun Padang Ke Arah Memasyarakat Koperasi: Jelajah Platinum IKMa 70 Tahun programme at Kemena Plaza Hotel here yesterday.

Dr Ripin noted that issues such as the failure to hold annual general meetings, delays in preparing audited financial statements, weak compliance with by-laws and a lack of transparency in decision-making are often linked to low cooperative literacy among leaders.

As such, he said efforts to strengthen human capital through cooperative education are no longer optional but an urgent necessity.

“Continuous education will produce a line-up of cooperative leaders who are not only knowledgeable, but also strategic in thinking, highly ethical and capable of making sound decisions for the sustainability and growth of cooperatives,” he said.

He said this forms the foundation for building a resilient, competitive and relevant cooperative ecosystem in line with national development.

At the same time, Dr Ripin pointed out that the cooperative movement is no longer a small sector in the national economy, but has evolved into a key component of Malaysia’s people-centric economic ecosystem.

Currently, he said, there are more than 16,000 registered cooperatives nationwide with membership exceeding 7.4 million, sending a clear message that cooperatives are not merely economic institutions but a community-driven movement.

“Cooperatives provide a platform for people to unite, share resources and build collective economic strength,” he said.

Looking ahead, he stressed that cooperatives must be prepared to face new challenges by shifting from conventional approaches to more innovative, technology-driven models.

He said cooperatives should leverage digital platforms and e-commerce to expand markets, while utilising data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) to better understand customer needs and make more informed decisions.

In addition, the adoption of automation systems and digital management can enhance operational efficiency while strengthening governance in a more transparent and systematic manner.

Dr Ripin also encouraged cooperatives to explore new economic sectors such as the digital economy, green economy, gig economy and innovation-based industries, which could open up new income streams, boost competitiveness and attract youth participation.

In the context of Sarawak, he said cooperatives hold immense potential in empowering community economies.

“With rich natural resources, strong local communities and opportunities in sectors such as community tourism, modern agriculture and small enterprises, cooperatives can play a more significant role as catalysts for local economic development,” he said.

He added that this year is particularly meaningful as it marks the Jelajah Platinum IKMa in conjunction with the 70th anniversary of the Malaysia Cooperative Institute (IKMa).

“For seven decades, IKMa has played a vital role in developing human capital and leadership in the cooperative sector.

“Thousands of cooperative leaders have benefited from various education and training programmes organised by IKMa,” he said.

This, he added, proves that the success of a cooperative does not depend solely on financial capital, but more importantly on knowledge, leadership quality and integrity in management.

“The ground engagement approach implemented through programmes like this is highly significant and impactful in enabling IKMa to directly engage cooperative members, understand on-the-ground realities and deliver knowledge and guidance in a more contextual and practical manner,” he said.

NANJING (April 10): Ten-year-old Zhang Zijian had never felt closer to nature. During a rare extended school break, the fourth grader traded textbooks for trails, hiking and climbing through scenic hills, his steps tracing the contours of a season in bloom.

“For a six-day holiday, I spent five days outdoors,” Zhang said.

“I also picked spring tea leaves and dug bamboo shoots with friends. It was exhausting, but the experience felt fresh and rewarding.”

Encouraged by his grandfather, Zhang joined a spring hiking program organised by a travel agency in Yixing, east China’s Jiangsu Province.

“Challenging the daily step count made it even more fun,” he added.

His grandfather, Zhang Bing, found equal joy.

“My grandson enjoys tracking his steps, and during the holiday, he was happy to get moving. It’s his first spring break, and he’s discovering the beauty of nature among bamboo groves and waterways.”

China’s latest government work report has proposed supporting regions with suitable conditions to introduce spring and autumn breaks for primary and middle schools.

Provinces including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Sichuan and Hunan have rolled out three-day spring breaks, which this year aligned with the Qingming Festival from April 4 to 6, forming a six-day getaway that has opened a window for families to embrace the outdoors.

The initiative echoes winter “snow holidays” introduced in some northern regions, where students are encouraged to take to ski slopes.

In spring, the classroom now gives way to open fields and forested paths, as young people flock to hiking, cycling, frisbee and other outdoor pursuits, sweating freely under soft sunlight.

Local authorities have leaned into the momentum. Jiangsu’s provincial sports bureau has unveiled a slate of student-friendly spring itineraries featuring kayaking, cycling and simulated combat games, with a kite-flying carnival in Yangcheng drawing more than 1,000 families.

Farther south in Guizhou, youth sports events during the break include football, basketball and volleyball competitions alongside martial arts, rock climbing and roller skating, with tens of thousands expected to take part.

Schools in Anhui’s Huainan have woven spring excursions and sports meets into their holiday schedules, encouraging family-oriented activities such as group rope-skipping and tug-of-war.

The push comes amid concern over nearsightedness and obesity among Chinese youth. With its mild weather, spring is widely seen as an ideal season for exercise that can boost cardiovascular health, build strength and improve coordination.

Even in cities like Beijing, where a spring break has yet to be adopted, children were seen during the Qingming holiday venturing into nearby mountains for outdoor adventures such as fishing, hiking, and foraging for wild vegetables.

Some also tried activities like tree climbing and slacklining to gain both practical knowledge and a tactile sense of the season.

In Inner Mongolia, middle school students are being encouraged to combine exercise with cultural learning by practicing traditional grassland sports such as wrestling and archery.

Public sports facilities have also expanded their access. Across Jiangsu, venues have extended hours and offered free or discounted entry for students.

At the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center, selected tennis courts, badminton halls and swimming pools opened free of charge to young visitors during the break.

Beyond physical benefits, the spring break policy is also seen as a step further to ease academic and psychological pressure.

Schools are encouraged not to assign written homework during the holiday, while group tutoring and off-campus training are strictly restricted.

“Without homework, my child just comes out to play football,” said Nanjing resident Wang Junjun, watching from the sidelines.

“As long as he’s happy and healthy, we parents are happy too.”

Experts say the push dovetails with broader nationwide efforts to promote school sports, which now mandate no fewer than two hours of daily physical activity for primary and middle school students.

“Holidays like this do more than improve children’s well-being,” said Wang Shuhua, a researcher at the Jiangsu Academy of Social Sciences.

“They also stimulate the integration of sports and tourism, encourage spending on sporting equipment, and energise the broader sports economy. Some regions are already preparing to introduce autumn breaks as well.” – Xinhua

JINAN (April 10): An unmanned delivery vehicle pulled up in front of Zhou Li, a resident in Qingdao, east China’s Shandong Province.

After scanning the QR code on its side, she collected her order — beer, sausage and roasted nuts — before the vehicle quietly drove away on its own.

“I never imagined groceries could be delivered this way,” Zhou said, still amazed by her first experience with the self-driving delivery vehicle.

Costing 9.9 yuan (about US$1.44) per time for deliveries within 30 km, the service was, in her view, reasonably priced.

In the coastal city of Qingdao, autonomous delivery vehicles are now a familiar sight on the streets.

With no driver’s section or steering wheel, the boxy vehicles resemble compact metal containers, measuring roughly half the size of a standard passenger car.

Powered by artificial intelligence (AI), the vehicle can plan routes, recognise road conditions, detect traffic lights and nearby obstacles, and brake or maneuver to avoid collisions.

So far, unmanned delivery vehicles in China handle major tasks such as transporting packages from distribution hubs to local nodes and providing on-time delivery of perishable goods and cold-chain medicines.

Some are also used in logistics within industrial parks.

Qingdao is now home to roughly 1,150 unmanned delivery vehicles, making it one of China’s largest application sites.

Neolix, a leading domestic player in this sector, holds a significant share of the fleet.

Last June, the company began piloting the unmanned delivery service in the eastern port city.

Currently, vehicles running there have a load-bearing capacity of one tonne, a cargo space of six cubic meters, a top speed of 45 km per hour, and a battery range of 200 km.

Since 2021, Neolix has been developing AI-based vision algorithms that enable its vehicles to interpret complex traffic conditions with the judgment of an experienced driver, thus significantly cutting the cost of map collection and updates, according to Miao Qiankun, the company’s chief technology officer.

As of last September, the firm had deployed more than 10,000 vehicles in total. In addition to working closely with domestic courier firms, the company has expanded its presence to over 15 countries and regions worldwide, including Japan, the Republic of Korea, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition to Qingdao, self-driving delivery vehicles have now entered daily delivery service across China.

In Shenzhen, a tech hub in south China’s Guangdong Province, 432 unmanned vehicles completed 1.02 million autonomous deliveries last September, generating 8.7 million yuan in revenue.

In Beijing, the on-demand delivery platform Meituan uses a hybrid model where self-driving vehicles move orders to relay points for couriers to complete final delivery.

Even in rural areas of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, unmanned vehicles deliver packages to remote villages 60 km away, where each trip often carries only two or three parcels — too few to make traditional deliveries profitable.

“Using unmanned delivery vehicles can reduce operating costs by nearly half compared with the traditional delivery mode,” said Yao Lei, a manager at Yunda Express, a major express provider in China.

As of June 2025, more than 100 cities in China have launched pilot programs that place autonomous delivery vehicles on public roads.

Last September, the Ministry of Commerce and other departments issued guidelines encouraging areas with suitable conditions to accelerate the development of operational and regulatory standards for unmanned delivery vehicles.

Low cost, convenience of dispatch, and high efficiency of the self-driving delivery vehicles can address pressing challenges in last-mile logistics, such as high expenses and labor shortages, said Li Tiegang, a professor at the School of Economics, Shandong University.

He added that the technology’s rapid large-scale adoption in China is supported by a combination of mature technology, robust market demand, as well as strong policy backing.

The development of intelligent connected vehicles was highlighted in China’s 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), which identified the sector as a strategic emerging industry.

The integration of AI into various industries is encouraged to drive the development and better meet people’s daily needs, according to the plan.

“The promotion of unmanned delivery vehicles is not simply about replacing human labor,” said Li.

“It focuses on human-machine collaboration. While optimising delivery services, it will also create new jobs in operations, maintenance and dispatch.” – Xinhua

BEIRUT (April 9): Israel vowed to continue its campaign against Hezbollah on Thursday, dismissing mounting international concern that its strikes on Lebanon threaten a fragile US-Iran truce that could lead to peace negotiations.

At least 203 people were killed and 1,000 wounded in airstrikes on Wednesday, the Lebanese health ministry said, while Hezbollah said it was engaged in close quarters combat against Israeli forces on the ground on Thursday in the south Lebanon town of Bint Jbeil.

Iran’s parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Tehran sees Lebanon as an “inseparable part of the ceasefire” and President Masoud Pezeshkian said Israel’s strikes rendered “meaningless” talks with US envoys planned for the end of the week in Pakistan.

President Donald Trump claimed victory in the Middle East war after agreeing a two-week truce to allow talks between US and Iranian negotiators to end a conflict that has already killed thousands and plunged the global economy into turmoil — but both Israel and the US insist the fighting in Lebanon is not covered by the ceasefire.

“We are continuing to strike Hezbollah with force, precision, and determination,” Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, in a social media post. “Our message is clear: anyone who acts against Israeli civilians, we will strike them. We will continue to hit Hezbollah wherever necessary.”

Tehran’s ambassador to Pakistan, meanwhile, deleted a social media post saying an Iranian delegation would arrive in Pakistan on Thursday.

An official at the Iranian embassy in Islamabad told AFP the post was removed “because of some issues” and refused to say whether the delegation was still expected.

‘Running left and right’

Amid fears that the fragile truce could break down in the Gulf, there were international calls for the ceasefire to encompass Lebanon.

“Israeli actions are putting the US-Iran ceasefire under severe strain. The Iran truce should extend to Lebanon,” the European Union’s top diplomat Kaja Kallas said.

France’s foreign minister Jean-Noel Barrot condemned the strikes as “unacceptable”, while his British counterpart Yvette Cooper called for the ceasefire to include Lebanon.

The Lebanese prime minister’s office said Thursday would be “a national day of mourning for the martyrs and wounded of the Israeli attacks that targeted hundreds of innocent, defenceless civilians”.

UN rights chief Volker Turk called the scale of killing in Lebanon “horrific”, after strikes across the capital Beirut that came without warning triggered horror and panic.

“People started running left and right, and smoke was billowing,” said Ali Younes, who was waiting for his wife near Corniche Al-Mazraa, one of the areas targeted.

Hezbollah said it had fired rockets towards Israel in response to what it called a violation of the truce.

US Vice President JD Vance backed Israel in saying Lebanon was excluded from the truce, days before he was due to lead talks with Tehran in Pakistan.

“If Iran wants to let this negotiation fall apart… over Lebanon, which has nothing to do with them, and which the United States never once said was part of the ceasefire, that’s ultimately their choice,” he said.

High-stakes talks

Separately, the head of Iran’s nuclear energy agency, Mohammad Eslami, dismissed Washington’s suggestions that the truce deal would halt Tehran’s nuclear programme.

“The claims and demands of our enemies to restrict Iran’s enrichment programme are merely wishes that will be buried,” he said.

The bellicose rhetoric came ahead of high-stakes talks in Pakistan expected on Friday or Saturday.

A key point of contention remains the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s oil as well as vast quantities of natural gas and fertiliser pass in peacetime.

Iran announced alternative routes on Thursday for ships travelling through the strait, citing the risk of sea mines.

But it was unclear if Tehran was in practice allowing vessels to pass through the strait, following reports on Wednesday suggesting it was shut — something the White House called “completely unacceptable”. – AFP

KUCHING (April 9): Enforcement officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak seized 500 litres of diesel worth RM1,075 believed to be stored illegally during a raid on a storage premises in Semaba on Wednesday.

KPDN Sarawak director Matthew Dominic Barid said the raid, conducted under Ops Tiris 4.0 at about 10.48am, was carried out following intelligence gathered, in a joint operation with the Royal Malaysia Police Special Branch.

“A further inspection found the diesel stored in an intermediate bulk container (IBC) tank, with the total value of the seizure estimated at RM3,625,” he said in a statement.

Matthew said the premises was believed to have been used as an illegal storage site for controlled diesel purchased from petrol stations before being resold to buyers.

“One case has been recorded under Ops 555 and is being investigated under Section 21 of the Control of Supplies Act 1961 for possession of controlled goods under suspicious circumstances,” he said.

He added that individuals convicted under the Act may face a fine of up to RM1 million, imprisonment of up to three years, or both, with heavier penalties for repeat offences.

Companies, meanwhile, may be fined up to RM2 million, increasing to RM5 million for subsequent offences.

Matthew said KPDN Sarawak remains committed to strengthening cooperation with enforcement agencies, including the police, to curb the misappropriation of controlled goods, particularly diesel.

“We will not compromise with any party involved in such activities to ensure government subsidies reach the intended groups and are not misused or smuggled out of the country,” he said.

He also urged the public to act as the ministry’s eyes and ears by reporting suspicious activities involving traders or distributors through official complaint channels.

KUCHING (April 9): The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) is in the final stages of concluding the sale of Merdeka Palace Hotel & Suites to Permodalan Satok Berhad.

Felda chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said both parties have reached an agreement, with the transaction now pending approval from higher authorities.

“Regarding the sale of Merdeka Palace Hotel, there is already an agreement with Permodalan Satok. We have reached the final stage of negotiations and are now only awaiting approval from the relevant authorities,” he said, according to a TV Sarawak report.

He was met by the press after paying a courtesy call on Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here.

Ahmad Shabery added that Felda, as an agency under the Prime Minister’s Department, will ensure the sale is conducted transparently and in accordance with established regulations.

“God willing, it will be managed properly. We do not want a hotel that is historically significant and a landmark in Kuching to fall into unsuitable hands that do not align with the needs of the state and the country,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Information Department reported Ahmad Shabery as saying that Felda is exploring potential collaboration with the Sarawak government in land management, plantations and green economy initiatives.

He said the matter was discussed during the meeting with Abang Johari.

Ahmad Shabery noted that although Sarawak does not have Felda land schemes like other states, the agency still holds interests in the state through asset ownership, including land, plantations and investments via subsidiaries such as FGV Holdings Berhad and related cooperatives.

Among the key matters discussed was the need to reassess asset utilisation to ensure optimal returns, whether by retaining them under Felda or managing them more strategically through related entities.

“Felda will hold further discussions with the Sarawak government to identify the best approaches in land management and asset development in line with the state’s needs,” he said.

He also described Sarawak as progressive in implementing green economy initiatives, including the use of renewable energy such as solar and hydropower, as well as circular economy practices.

He said the shared strengths between Felda as a large-scale plantation agency and Sarawak’s sustainable development approach present opportunities for collaboration in shaping policies at the national level.

“Such cooperation is vital in the context of federal environmental policies, including the implementation of carbon tax and carbon credit mechanisms, which have the potential to generate new revenue through sustainable forest and plantation management,” he added.

Wardina shows her award certificate and plaque.

KUCHING (April 9): From the kitchen classroom to the global stage, 21-year-old Wardina Batrisyia Nasib is proving that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) talent can excel internationally.

The Kolej Vokasional Kuching student recently added another feather to her cap after being named recipient of the Malaysia Education Director-General Special Award — a prestigious honour recognising all-round excellence.

Presented by Education director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad, Wardina received the award during the 10th Convocation Ceremony of Vocational Colleges 2025 at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia on Wednesday.

Wardina, a Diploma in Culinary Arts student, took home a certificate, plaque, and RM1,000 cash prize, but it is her growing list of international achievements that truly sets her apart.

Hailing from Kampung Haji Baki, she has been quietly cooking up success beyond Malaysia’s borders.

Among her recent accomplishments is a gold medal at the World Youth STEM Invention Innovation 2026 in Bangkok.

Her winning project LE SPICES — a culinary innovation — impressed judges and outperformed participants from 10 countries in the competition organised by the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organisation and the Malaysia Young Scientists Organisation.

This latest triumph marks her third win at the Asia level.

Over the years, Wardina has continued to strengthen her portfolio of achievements.

In 2025, she secured a gold medal at the World Sustainable Development Goal Challenge held at Multimedia University, along with two special accolades: the Best Innovation Jury Special Award, and the Best Innovation Poster Award.

A year earlier, she led her Kolej Vokasional Kuching team to a runner-up finish at the 11th Indonesia Inventors Day in Bali.

As the eldest of three siblings, Wardina’s journey reflects how local talent from Sarawak can compete and succeed on the world stage when given the right support and opportunities.

Her story not only brings pride to the state but also underscores the growing relevance of TVET in nurturing globally competitive innovators, one creative idea at a time.

Len Talif fields questions from the media.

KUCHING (April 9): A section of the Second Trunk Road (STR) cutting through Ulu Sebuyau National Park could be developed into a new eco-tourism attraction in Sarawak, said Datuk Len Talif Salleh.

The State Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Urban Development said the initiative reflects the state’s ability to develop modern infrastructure while preserving its natural heritage.

“I hope the Public Work Departments will include lay-bys along the roadside so visitors can stop and enjoy the scenic views of the park,” he said during the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak ‘Nostalgia Raya’ open house here.

Len Talif added that the decision to construct an elevated highway instead of a conventional road was made specifically to protect the park’s ecosystem, which is home to orangutans in the Payak Gambut area.

“We are fully aware of the environmental impact of this road. This is one of the state government’s initiatives to minimise disruption to the ecosystem.

“It is the first time we are adopting such an approach,” he said.

He also said that public participation is essential in maintaining the cleanliness in the area, pointing to littering issues along the Pan Borneo Highway.

“We need to educate the public not to dispose of rubbish irresponsibly. This forms part of the broader educational effort that must be practised.”

Len Talif also stressed that relevant agencies must play their part by providing proper waste disposal facilities along the highway.

“The responsible bodies should ensure proper garbage facilities are made available along the route,” he added.

KUALA LUMPUR (April 9): Recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia have emphasised the urgency for Malaysia to strengthen its energy security and accelerate its transition efforts, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

He said the volatility of global energy markets proved that energy security is not theoretical, but is deeply structural.

“We face a delicate balance, transitioning away from fossil fuels while safeguarding energy security.

“Short-term gains from high oil prices must not distract us from long-term vulnerabilities because true security is not about what we earn today but what we can sustain tomorrow,” he said in his keynote address at the Malaysia Energy, Water & Climate Change Summit 2026 here today.

The summit, themed “Implementing Infrastructure, Renewable Energy, and Water Reform for a Net Zero Malaysia”, was also attended by KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific president Tan Sri Michael Yeoh.

Fadillah, who is also Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, said that across ASEAN, similar pressures are unfolding, and history has shown that during a crisis, the instinct is often to retreat, delay transition and extend reliance on fossil fuels.

“But we must resist that instinct. A nation is not defined by what it promises, but by what it delivers consistently, quietly and with conviction.

“The energy transition is not a climate obligation. It is a strategic necessity. Every megawatt of renewable energy we generate locally is a step away from vulnerability, and a step toward sovereignty,” he said.

He said Malaysia has already established a clear policy direction through the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), but stressed that implementation must now translate into action.

“First, the grid. Renewable energy is no longer the constraint. Transmission is. Without grid expansion, our ambitions will remain stranded,” he said.

On the tariff reform, Fadillah said subsidies may soften the present, but they burden the future, and a sustainable system must reflect real costs so that investment can follow.

Meanwhile, he added that Malaysia loses over 30 per cent of treated water, with more than 40 per cent in some states.

“And yet, tariffs remain disconnected from operational realities. We cannot expect sustainability from a system that cannot sustain itself.

“Technology offers solutions, (such as) smart metering, artificial intelligence (AI) detection (of water leaks), optimisation systems, but technology alone is not enough. If energy powers our growth, water determines whether that growth can endure,” he said.

He also said federal commitment must be matched by effective implementation at the state level, stressing that alignment is critical to delivering large-scale transformation.

“Transformation does not happen in silos. It happens in unity,” he said. – Bernama

KUCHING (April 9): Kuching city centre was awash with colour and celebration today as the grand birthday procession of the Seng Ong Kong deity from Hong San Si Temple drew one of its largest turnouts in recent years.

Devotees, local residents and foreign tourists thronged the streets to witness the annual spectacle.

The procession, which began at 3.30pm, featured lion and dragon dance troupes, elaborately decorated floats, and cultural performances from Chinese associations, schools, and various ethnic communities.

A standout feature was the 295-foot-long ‘Fire Dragon’, made of bound grass and carried through the streets, with devotees placing joss sticks into the structure as a symbol of prayer and good fortune.

This year’s celebration also highlighted Sarawak’s multicultural spirit. Malay hadrah drum troupe Kumpulan Hadrah Sri Melati and indigenous performers from Gabungan Orang Asal Sabah/Sarawak (GOASS) joined the festivities, performing alongside Chinese temple groups and school associations — a vibrant testament to inclusivity and mutual respect.

Among the distinguished guests were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South City Council mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, and Kuching Hokkien Association president Richard Wee.

Richard said the event has grown into one of Kuching’s most significant cultural and religious occasions.

“We try to restrict the number of troops to about 222 every year. I think this is one of the largest participant turnouts,” he told reporters during the procession.

He added that the celebration attracted temple delegations from Sabah, Labuan, and Kedah, further amplifying its scale and vibrancy.

On its tourism potential, Richard said he had discussed the event with the State Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

“Because this is the largest procession in Kuching, he said he would definitely consider making it part of the tourism calendar,” he said.

The procession wound through major roads in the city centre before returning to Hong San Si Temple on Wayang Street.

The annual Seng Ong Kong birthday celebration remains a key occasion for devotees to express their faith, preserve Chinese cultural heritage, strengthen community bonds, and promote Sarawak’s multicultural harmony.

PENAMPANG (April 9): Kapayan assemblyman Chin Teck Ming has filed a Private Member’s Motion in the Sabah Legislative Assembly calling for the immediate implementation of the state’s constitutional right to 40 per cent of federal revenue derived from Sabah.

Chin said the motion, submitted to the State Assembly Speaker on April 2, seeks for Sabah to receive its entitlement under Article 112C and the Tenth Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

“I have filed a Private Member’s Motion to demand the immediate implementation of Sabah’s constitutional right to receive 40 per cent of the net revenue derived by the Federal Government from Sabah,” he told reporters at a press conference here.

The motion is supported by four Parti Warisan assemblymen: Jamil Hamzah (Bugaya), Yusri Pungut (Sindumin), Mohammad Abdul Karim (Segama) and Nurulalsah Hassan Alban (Sungai Sibuga).

Chin said the move was prompted by what he described as a significant gap between the revenue Sabah receives and the actual amount collected by the federal government from the state.

He cited official parliamentary records showing Sabah received RM125.6 million annually in 2022 and 2023, followed by RM300 million in 2024, and RM600 million in 2025, including an additional RM300 million announced last September.

“Based on available records, the total received over four years is only about RM851.2 million plus RM300 million,” he said.

However, Chin estimated that federal revenue collected from Sabah — including income tax, customs duties and petroleum-related income — ranges between RM20 billion and RM30 billion annually.

“This means Sabah’s 40 per cent entitlement is estimated at between RM8 billion and RM12 billion per year,” he said.

He alleged that Sabah could have been underpaid by between RM7 billion and RM11 billion annually, amounting to a total shortfall of between RM28 billion and RM44 billion from 2022 to 2025 alone.

“This is not just about numbers. These are Sabah’s rights that have been denied. This is the future of Sabahans taken away little by little each year,” he said.

Chin also criticised the lack of transparency over the actual revenue figures.

“Until today, the people of Sabah and the State Government have not been given full disclosure of the actual figures. Without transparency, how can Sabah claim what is rightfully ours?” he asked.

He urged the state government to act swiftly by tabling and passing the motion and reporting the status of negotiations with the federal government within 60 days.

“The Sabah government must act now, not tomorrow, and must claim every sen that belongs to Sabah,” he said, adding that legal action should be considered if necessary.

Calling for unity, Chin said the issue transcends politics and concerns the rights and dignity of all Sabahans.

“This is not about a few individuals or any political party. This is about the dignity and rights of Sabah,” he said.

He also urged the public to demand accountability.

“The people must ask how much revenue is taken from Sabah, where has it gone, and why Sabah is not receiving what was promised under the Federal Constitution.

“Public pressure is power. Only through strong and continuous pressure will the government be compelled to act,” he said.

KUCHING (April 9): The Malaysian Media Council (MMM) has called for an official dialogue session between authorities and media representatives to clarify procedures for handling coverage at incident locations.

The council said the session should address operational boundaries, communication protocols and mechanisms for resolving issues on the ground.

The statement was issued in response to recent interactions between enforcement authorities and media practitioners during the coverage of an attack incident at an entertainment premises in Cheras.

Stressing that journalism is a legitimate function within a democratic system, MMM said journalists have the responsibility to record and report information to the public, including at incident locations, as long as it does not directly interfere with security operations.

“In this context, any directives involving journalistic materials or devices must be handled with great care and based on clear principles.

“Disproportionate actions risk undermining the role of the media as well as public confidence in the transparent and responsible flow of information,” it said in a statement on Wednesday.

The council added that the relationship between the media and the police should be grounded in mutual understanding of their respective roles.

MMM noted that while the police are responsible for managing security and the integrity of investigations, the media plays a significant role in ensuring information reaches the public.

“Both roles require respected boundaries and clear communication on the ground,” the council said.

In this regard, MMM emphasised that journalists have the right to carry out their duties lawfully without undue interference.

“Any restrictions must have a clear basis, be limited and proportionate,” it added.

The council also stressed that approaches on the ground should prioritise professional communication to avoid misunderstandings and tension.

MMM said the proposed dialogue is essential in fostering mutual understanding and preventing similar incidents from recurring.

“As a self-regulatory body for the industry, MMM is ready to facilitate such engagement to strengthen professional working relations between the media and enforcement agencies.

“Journalism is not a crime. It is a responsibility to the public,” the council added.

KOTA SAMARAHAN (April 9): Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education is a strategic priority in preparing Sarawak’s youth to contribute to emerging sectors such as digital technology and renewable energy, said Sarawak Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said the state government is taking a deliberate, structured approach to nurturing STEM talent from an early stage to achieve the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 aspirations.

“The state government is not waiting for talent to emerge but is actively building it,” he said during the closing ceremony and award presentation of the International Science, Technology and Engineering Expo 2026 (i-STEEx 2026) at DeTAR Putra, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) here.

Sagah commended Unimas’ Faculty of Engineering for organising the expo, describing it as a strong reflection of the university’s commitment to cultivating innovation and strengthening STEM education among school students in Sarawak.

“The ideas and projects presented today, though still prototypes, are the seeds of future innovation.

“Within these halls may stand the future engineers, scientists and technology leaders who will drive Sarawak’s development,” he said.

He stressed that reinforcing STEM at the school level is crucial, as it equips students with analytical thinking, creativity, problem-solving skills, and technological literacy — competencies needed in sectors such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Among the ministry’s initiatives are support for participation in WorldSkills Malaysia and WorldSkills International, closer industry collaboration to ensure relevant and employable skills, and backing platforms like i-STEEx to identify and nurture talent early.

“Through these efforts, we aim to produce not just graduates, but future leaders, innovators and skilled professionals,” he said.

About 70 teams of primary and secondary school students from across Sarawak competed in the eighth edition of i-STEEx 2026, themed “Innovate Solutions for a Sustainable Future”.

The expo was held in conjunction with the Unimas Engineering Conference 2026 (EnCon26).

The quality of projects was exceptionally high, evaluated by a panel of academic, industry, and government representatives.

Since its inception in 2016, i-STEEx has impacted over 1,500 students and teachers across the state.

A new highlight this year was the Gamified Learning Workshop, organised by the Unimas Gamification Centre with support from Pelangi Publishing Group Berhad.

The workshop attracted educators from Sarawak, Sabah, and Peninsular Malaysia, reflecting its relevance to the national digital education landscape.

The event was supported by strategic partners including the State Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation, the Prime Minister’s Department, and industrial partners Anggun Tegas and East Bio.

Meanwhile, Unimas Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Ahmad Hata Rasit said i-STEEx underscores the university’s role as a bridge connecting university expertise with the potential of schoolchildren.

“Keep asking ‘why’ and ‘how’, because that is where innovation begins,” he said.

The ceremony concluded with the announcement of top innovators in the primary and secondary categories.
